Meet Chief of Police Carla Redd
Chief Carla Redd, a proud Rockford native and a member of the last graduating class of West High School, began her career with the Rockford Police Department in 1998. From the very start, her mission has centered on serving and enhancing the community, particularly in addressing issues like affordable housing in Rockford. Chief Redd's diverse experience includes roles as a Patrol officer, Field Training Officer, Community Services Officer, Detective, and Sergeant. In 2015, she made history by becoming the first black woman to achieve a command rank as a Lieutenant and later advanced to Assistant Deputy Chief in 2020, overseeing all three Patrol Districts and the Investigative Services Bureau. In September 2021, she was appointed as the first female Chief of Police in Rockford. Chief Redd holds an Associate Degree in Criminology from Rock Valley College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Northern Illinois University, and a certification in Criminal Justice from the University of Virginia. Additionally, she is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy. Outside of her impactful career, Chief Redd enjoys exploring the outdoors of Rockford with her husband, two children, and two grandchildren. How We Work
An applicant for the police officer position within the Rockford Police Department should be informed about the Patrol Division's 10-hour shifts:
6:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
4:00 P.M. to 2:00 A.M.
9:00 P.M. to 7:00 A.M.
After successfully completing the police officer application process and training program, you will be assigned to a patrol shift—it's where everyone starts! Each year, you will have the chance to bid for the shift of your choice, with assignments influenced by seniority.
