Chief Carla Redd is a Rockford native and was in the last graduating class of West High School. In 1998, she joined the ranks of the Rockford Police Department and from day one her focus has been on serving and improving the community at large. She started off in Patrol, became a Field Training Officer, Community Services Officer, Detective and then Sergeant. Chief Redd became the first black woman to achieve a command rank as a Lieutenant in 2015 and in 2020, she became an Assistant Deputy Chief. As ADC, she commanded all three Patrol Districts and the Investigative Services Bureau. In September of 2021, the Rockford Police Department welcomed her as its first female Chief of Police. Chief Redd has an Associate Degree in Criminology from Rock Valley College, a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Northern Illinois University, a certification in Criminal Justice from the University of Virginia and is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy. She definitely enjoys all that Rockford has to offer including spending time outdoors with her husband, two children, and grandchild.

Upon completion of the training program, you will be assigned to a patrol shift. Once a year you will have the opportunity to bid for the shift of your choice. Assignments to the shifts will be determined by seniority.
